History
Tsuyama High School has a more than 130-year old history. It was first established as jinjyo-chugakko (traditional Japanese education-system junior high school) in 1895. In 1948, after undergoing several changes in its names as well as its organizational and educational systems, the school was founded with the present school name at the current site. In 1995, the centennial anniversary of the school's foundation was celebrated and the main school building was designated as an important national cultural property. The other school buildings were rebuilt between 1995 and 1998. In 2015, Okayama Prefectural Tsuyama Junior High School was established in the same place.
The school boasts over 40,000 graduates, who have been successful nationally and internationally in various fields such as politics, business, industry, education, and medical service.
School Motto and Spirits
The school motto is "畏天敬人"(I-ten Kei-jin). "I-ten" means that since you cannot understand all the mechanisms of nature, you should behave in conformity with and awe of natural providence. That is, you should be humble, not arrogant. "Kei-jin" means that you should learn to be modest and respect yourself and others. In other words, you should improve your self-esteem and be kind to others around you.
In addition to the school motto, the school's spirits have been passed down from the time of its foundation. First, there is "文武両道" (Bun-bu Ryodo), which means to work diligently on both studies and extracurricular activities. Second, we have "質実剛健" (Shitsu-jitsu Goken), which means to be a simple and sturdy person who has inner fortitude.
